Rehabilitation of the Franciscan Church and Monastery in Gherla
KÉSZ Romania acted as general contractor for the complete refurbishment and complex rehabilitation of the Franciscan church and monastery in Gherla. The works started in August 2018 and were completed in July 2021.
During the renovation works, special attention was paid to preserving the building’s monumental values, restoring and strengthening damaged structural elements, and integrating modern technical and electrical systems.
Numerous artistic components were restored, including frescoes, stained glass windows, wooden elements, and the organ. A significant portion of the roof structure was also rehabilitated, and a new clock mechanism and an automatic bell-ringing system were installed. The project succeeded in maintaining a balance between the preservation of the historic character and compliance with contemporary requirements, ensuring that the sacred complex can continue to serve the community and its visitors in the long term.
The renovation was carried out with the support of the European Regional Development Fund and the Romanian state budget, with a total value of approximately EUR 4.5 million. Beyond its religious and cultural significance, the project also contributes to strengthening local community identity and stimulating tourism.
